The science behind SimSimple.
Simulation Simplified is grounded in the principles of Visually Enhanced Mental Simulation (VEMS), a method that combines mental rehearsal with visual aids and collaborative discussion. By using simple, tangible tools like laminated patient diagrams and equipment representations, VEMS facilitates team-based training that enhances decision-making, communication, and shared mental models. Since being described by Dogan et al. in 2021 there has been rapid uptake in a wide variety of healthcare contexts. There is exciting ongoing research related to the design and delivery of VEMS. We would love to hear about any research you are doing!
Tips for Scenario Design.
SimSimple is still a simulation modality and deserves the same care and attention to design and delivery as mannequin or simulated patient delivery methods. We encourage you to access the Simulcast Self-Development on Simulation Scenario Design.
SimSimple lends itself best to learning objectives related to teamwork, prioritization of tasks, and creating shared mental models. It is less ideal for learning objectives related to the physical completion of tasks, and authentic timing. It can be combined with part task trainers or other modalities.
You can use scenarios that you have designed or soon you will be able to purchase scenario banks on our website.
Tips for Preparation and Pre-briefing.
- Choose a suitable location (two tables works best)
- Conduct a pre-briefing that is relevant for your context and group
- Be upfront about the limitations of SimSimple including physical realism (there is none!)
- Include a familiarization with the SimSimple modality – it can be helpful to get the participants interacting with the kit during this process.
- Give everyone a marker to draw on the patient and equipment!
Soon we will be sharing a resource video to show you what a briefing might look like!
Tips for Scenario Delivery.
SimSimple requires active facilitation - you will need to anticipate the cues that participants are looking for...try to give them information they need before they ask for it. SimSimple is not designed for the facilitator to be testing or tricking the participants, rather think of yourself as part of the team - giving critical information needed for success.
- If possible, have an embedded faculty member model engagement with the patient and SimSimple kit gear, actively helping the team throughout the scenario
- Some teams will benefit from the additional use of monitoring. We have found that the SIMPL Monitor available on the app store for android and apple is a great adjunct to the SimSimple kit.
Soon we will have a video resource available to show you some key tips about how to maximize engagement.
Additional Simulation Principles.
SimSimple is just another simulation modality to add to the toolkit for simulation facilitators. The principles related to simulation design, delivery, and debriefing still apply.
