SimSimple In Practice—The ETM Advanced Course
Share
The Emergency Trauma Management team recently ran their first ETM Advanced trauma course—and SimSimple Kits were a core component. Thanks to Andy Buck and team for trusting that SimSimple would support their needs.
A hybrid SimSimple/procedure station supported teaching around underwater seal drain troubleshooting and management of tracheobronchial injuries. This innovative pairing of visual simulation and procedural instruction allowed participants to engage both cognitively and practically, creating a seamless learning experience.
Small group sessions, including a walk-through of an obstetric traumatic cardiac arrest scenario, delivered interactively with pausing, discussion, and action. Facilitators guided participants through critical moments, giving drugs, transfusing blood, and executing procedures while adapting in real time—rewinding, changing variables, and observing how choices affected outcomes. Two additional traumatic cardiac arrest sessions ran concurrently, reinforcing core trauma principles with SimSimple’s flexible format.
The kits’ visual clarity, intuitive setup, and adaptability were especially appreciated by facilitators. In fast-paced courses like this one, portability matters. With no need for mannequins or AV equipment, VEMS enabled high-value learning in compact, well-paced segments. The faculty highlighted the kits as not just a convenience—but a pedagogical asset.
Feedback from facilitators emphasized the SimSimple kits' ability to make the abstract concrete and allow active, thoughtful participation. The team plans to refine their use in future courses and experiment with more hybrid formats that blend hands-on tasks and mental simulation seamlessly.
Overall, the experience confirmed what we hoped: that simple tools can drive sophisticated learning.
