SimSimple in Practice - Seizure in an Oupatient Clinic

At a recent faculty development workshop, a group of nurse educators explored how Visually Enhanced Mental Simulation (VEMS) could support team training in their own clinical settings. Using the SimSimple Basekit, participants learned how simple visual tools can bring meaningful simulation to life—without needing mannequins, tech, or a simulation lab.

During the session, one nurse educator decided that a patient experiencing a seizure would be the perfect scenario for their outpatient clinic teams to practice.

Within the workshop itself—and with only a brief introduction to VEMS—they were able to design and deliver the scenario using the laminated patient and equipment visuals from the Sim Simple Basekit. They layered in their organisation's guidelines, and workflows to create a case that felt both realistic and relevant.

The scenario focused on managing a tonic-clonic seizure in a consultation room. Participants could practice critical decisions around airway protection, medication use, and escalation, while also emphasizing team behaviours like role clarity, communication, and shared mental models.

What made this powerful was its accessibility: no mannequins, no tech support—just a room, a kit, and committed educators designing for their own context.

This faculty development workshop showed how quickly educators can adopt VEMS and start building their own scenarios. It also highlighted how simulation can be simple, local, and deeply effective—especially when it empowers teams to prepare for uncommon but confronting events.
